“Winter Hill location A loud jarring ringing of the school bell signaled freedom from the restraints of school until the next dreaded Monday morning. My street world was only a two block area in the Winter Hill section of Somerville, MA which housed many first generation immigrants from Ireland, Italy and a few other countries in Europe. Our street games always involved a pink dimple hollow rubber ball that could be used for stick ball, hand ball, “ outs” and many made up games of our choosing. At dinner time the streets went from a cacophony of the screams of play to the subtle sounds of the city. The sounds of autos passing, the distant hum of electric buses, the rattling of trash barrels being dragged to the curbs for early morning pick ups and all the seemingly same noises emanating from the closely packed houses on the street I call home, Dartmouth Street.
